It's that time of year again. The other night I was sitting in the living room, minding my own business with laptop on coffee table, and a spider the size of a mouse scuttled out from under the sofa.

OK, it was dark and I'm a spider wimp and maybe it wasn't quite that big, but you know the type: the ones whose legs don't all fit under a glass, that make an audible flop when they fall on the floor, and seem to *lurch* when they walk, like their own body weight is dragging them down. I mean, this one was big enough to be visible in dim light against the pattern of a red Persian rug. And that's just the latest of four monster encounters this fortnight. I don't mind spiders in general, but I hate these hulking, scrabbly, lopsided beasts. Ackkkk.

my mother in law is TERRIFIED of spiders of all sizes. (I'm good with spiders as long as they stay off of me. and out of my hair. god. I had a daddy longlegs in my hair last week after I went out to close up the chicken coop. you could hear me screaming on mars)

but anyways, when we still lived close to the MIL, she would call Koffer up at all times of the night and morning "COME OVER AND KILL SPIDER! IT HAS VISIBLE KNEES!" that always killed me. They were so big, she claimed, she could see their joints.

...I think she was being hysterical.

VISIBLE KNEES! I love that :) I sort of know what she means. I'm OK with even these big house spiders when they're still - I can catch one in a glass if I *have* to - but their movement really creeps me out. They're too damn fast and they have that way of running at you that looks really deliberate :shudder:
